Week 7 #16 Wiki's

Well, I went ahead and added some favorites to some of the pages on the iHCPL wiki.
I have used wiki's many many times in the past and have found them to be useful. They are quite good for working on a collaborative project when the people are in different areas. Using the wiki enables the co-workers to actually view the project without sending millions of emails and attachments, phone calls and mailings, etc.
I thought that the St. Joseph's County Library's Subject Heading wiki was interesting. It looked like they lifted their formatting and maybe even some of their information from wikipedia.
I definately like the Library Success wiki. It seems like there may be a lot of good information hidden throughout the dross.
One of the links led to a presentation which had a page on an internal library wiki. This is almost like our intranet, but more accessible and open to changes. It could also be applied at the more local branch level separately from the overal system level.

Now, it is a generally accepted rule (or if not, it should be!) that you cannot necessarily trust just any wiki out there (i.e. wikipedia). Because of the open access just about anyone can say just about anything and some people will take it as the gospel truth!! Not exactly always the right thing to do people! Even though there are many more limits placed on what people can say on wikis now, versus when they first became the new thing, it is still a dangerous thing to trust.
